In 1999 Anthony "Tony" Vaarwerk launched Findrentals.com, a vacation home directory service into the worldwide web. It took 3 years to establish the initial contacts and frame work for the site, so it wasn't until "2002" that the business really kicked off.
Findrentals.com is a family owned and operated business operating out of Buffalo, New York. If you're like me, when you think of Buffalo you don't think of a Tech Hub or a Vacation Rental Paradise, however, in the most unlikely of destinations is exactly where Findrentals.com was born.
Findrentals.com has the same focus that many other vacation home directory services have, pushing the vacation home market into the forefront of the travel industry. It is estimated that there are nearly 3.5 million homes for recreation usage in the United States of America with a clear majority along the coastlines.
"They offer a unique vacationing experience. More privacy, more space, more amenities, it's a good alternative for a family man with a wife and three kids" proclaims Tony. While this is true we asked about the struggles to catch up with the modernization of the hotel industry. "To play devil's advocate, it may be true that it is a longer process to book a stay with smaller homeowners, that's why we really push the envelope by creating strategic partnerships with Property Managers. They usually have booking reservation systems to help automate the process. We also established an affiliation with VRPN.com (Vacation Rental Property Network); they provide enterprise solutions for the vacation rental industry".
In 2008, like most other business, the recession took its toll on Findrentals.com. Combining two of the hardest hit industries, Housing and Tourism, Findrentals.com had to quickly switch gears on strategy. Tony quickly re-evaluated his product line and shifted his focus from product development to relationship maintenance. With an increased emphases on lowering costs to his clients (Vacation Home Owners and Vacation Property Managers), Tony created a strategy that he is hoping will be overwhelmingly appreciated in the industry. "I know that my clients are hurting, by lowering their cost, I am hoping to maintain their commitment during this difficult time". Internet marketing is still new to people, most of the owners aren't familiar with marketing tactics or strategies. They see their bottom line dropping so they stop marketing, big mistake".
So how is Findrentals.com doing in 2009? Retooling, in a big way! "It's about accountability. I had to learn that the hard way." With a re-launch of their homepage due to hit the net on March 11th, 2009, Findrentals.com is focusing their frontend on the Traveler. "We are tracking everywhere they are going, what they like, dislike and making changes as quickly as possible. Basically, we are getting back to the basics."
